What Apprentices Say ...

Martin, Daniel photo.jpg

"Like most kids I liked to play computer games. But I also liked to take computers apart, to diagnose them. I was very into the hardware side of things. I loved building and configuring computers. ... started looking at websites and I found the ACDS posting about apprenticeships. This is it, I thought, because it talked about how you don’t necessarily have to have any prior experience."

"I’m doing a SharePoint apprenticeship. SharePoint is a Microsoft program that helps companies build their own websites. ... I started in the first week of April, and the entire apprenticeship is one year. The first six months we’ll be earning our certifications with Microsoft, and then we’ll be put out into the field. It’s going really well."

"I’m actually the first in my family to graduate college. ... I worked at McDonald’s for several months after graduation. ... I saw First Orion’s apprenticeship post on Indeed, that they would hire me and teach me what I needed to know. ... I’ve now been at First Orion since the summer of 2018. I work with the mobile data team, which is comprised of a small number of people, and there are so many projects that we’re almost a shared resource. I feel like there's a lot of decision on what I can work on, which I love."

"I’m from West Africa originally. ... ACDS came to my school, at UCA, and told us about the data analytics apprenticeship program. I signed up, and they connected me with DXC, a really big company. ... We graduated from the apprenticeship classes in April, and now I’m a C/Unix Developer for DXC. I have the career I wanted."

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does it mean to have a professional career in IT?

The variety of careers available in the information technology profession are plentiful!  The team at ACDS recently hosted a webinar that you can find (HERE) and learn more about different Information Technology careers!

Q: Will I make the average salary on Day 1 of my new career?

The average salaries are for those who have several years of experience in their role and profession.  We use average salaries as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to show you where your career could lead.  Entry level salaries in the roles listed above could be as low as $35,000 - 40,000 depending on the size of the company that hires you on as an Apprentice.

Q: What if I don't do well on the assessment?

If your assessment reflects an aptitude for IT, you will be contacted for a Pre-Apprenticeship course. This course can be completed 100% online, and it is provided at no cost to you. If your assessment does not indicate an aptitude for IT work, you will be provided additional resources

Q: Is there a cost for the assessment or training?
Will this impact my weekly UI benefits claim?

No, the state of Arkansas is committed to reskilling Arkansans, and therefore the assessment and Pre-Apprenticeship course are provided at no cost to you. This program has been approved by the Division of Workforce Services as an approved training program, and anyone enrolling in this course will still be able to claim their weekly benefit.

Q: If my assessment indicates I am a good candidate for this program, how long will it be before I am contacted?

Once you have completed the assessment with a score above the threshold, the Arkansas Center for Data Sciences (ACDS) will be in touch with you within two weeks for next steps on how to enroll in the Pre-Apprenticeship and/or Registered Apprenticeship Programs.  Please remember that we may experience a high volume of qualified applicants during the initial period of this program and it may take longer than expected to connect you with our team of Talent Specialists.

Q: How long is the assessment and how do I prepare to take it?

The assessment is limited to 45 minutes and needs to be completed in one session. You cannot exit and restart at a later time, so please plan to only click 'start' when you're in a quiet place and can answer the questions in one sitting. Advanced preparation is not necessary for this assessment, as the assessment itself is evaluating aptitude and potential for the IT field rather than specific skill sets.

Q: How do I get my results and how long will it take?

The results will be provided to you within two weeks, and a Talent Specialist will be in touch to share next steps with you. Please note that due to the increased volume of participants in our ReSkill Arkansas program, we are working hard to get all questions answered and all participants contacted so you can be even closer to your career in IT.

Q: How do I find my Local Workforce Board's contact information?
Q: Who can I contact if I have additional questions?

Please reach out to our team Monday through Friday (8am to 5pm CST) at 501-621-0604 with any additional questions about the ReSkill Arkansas initiative.
